THIS WEEK's EXERCISE POST : THE FULL POST AND DETAILS

The “painterly style” has been a highly requested tutorial subject matter due to it’s increasing popularity to digital artists. Not sure what this style is referring to? Check out the Painterly Style Reference Board. The style has become even more popular from games that focus heavily on this art style such as Bastion or to digital artists like Purplekecleon, who we Interviewed last year. It has a bold and fresh look that relies on color and working with balancing the different hues to create value. The style is recognizable by 3 different factors: use of color shifting, visible brushstrokes, and fantastical lighting.
  • Color Shifting – Rather than relying on value for contrast, work with hue shifting and color harmonies to create the values for your subject matter.
  • Visible Brushstrokes – While keeping it in control, leave some brushstrokes unblended, letting the color contrast from the brush remain.
  • Fantastical Lighting – Little to no direct lighting or specula’s. The lighting is almost non-existent, and rather has an overcast, soft lighting feel to it.

EXERCISE: Create 6 given objects in the painterly style.

For this exercise, there are three examples you are to test your skill set on. You can download the practice sheet on the main page but below is an example setup.

For this exercise, there are six concepts below you are to test this skill set on. We are working on a neutral gray background to help focus on the colors and the true hues values that will compliment each other. Scroll further down to see quick examples of what each of these three are.

1. The first is a barrel: focus on the wood elements and think about adding some interesting lines to the wood cracks and chipping.

2. The second is rocks. Bring some color to the rocks and avoid realism. Work without using a texture brush to get that painterly look for rocks.

3. The third are crystals. Focus on lighting and how each plane is angled toward the lighting to catch a certain percentage to reflect it.

4. The fourth is a keyhole surrounded by a metal base. Just like the rocks, avoid using textures and look at real life examples for inspiration on color placement.

5. The fifth is a cute animal. This is where you can have some fun working in this style. Think about flat coloring and then building the interest from there

6. The sixth is a character profile. Lastly is a character bust and you are to take what you’ve learned from the previous 5 to create a neat character.

GOAL: To challenge your painting skills to acquire another style to add to your concept art knowledge.
