That part is the most important in taking the concept to the next level!

The key to this is translucency, which is why the human eyes are illuminated the same way these gems are here.

Agreed, when I went about doing it, I had more fun creating that amber look so I guess it could be called, shading an amber stone lol

... amber IS a gem...

Technically, amber is tree sap, so it's not from the ground, same with pearls, so I don't count them as gems, since they are from other things than pressure and heat on certain minerals. (Amber to me is a fossil, as its solidified tree sap)

If you want to get even more technical, amber is tree resin not sap=)
And the defenition of a gemstone is "a precious or semiprecious stone that may be used as a jewel when cut and polished".
Some might want to include amber into that category, some might want to limit that to crystals.
In my case, the jury's still out=P

well, i say amber isn't from the ground in the typical 'stone' sense
(also, what's hilarious is that Amethyst is just normal quartz but its oh so precious because its purple (and its my birthstone, so why am i hating on it?))

also, i believe this was meant for the literal gemstones like ruby or tigerseye (is that even a real one? or am i just too addicted to WoW?)

Things get very special and sought after if they're of an unusal colour: amethyst, blue amber, pink and black diamonds etc.
Only 100kg of blue amber is found every year.
